We were already in Utah when I got sick. Backpacking through Grand Gulch and bikepacking back to our truck seemed a bit of a stretch under the circumstances. We went with plan B1.1. Visiting some of the other well known and not so well known ancient ruins throughout the southwest. Since we were camped on Cedar Mesa it was logical to start there.
Mule Canyon
From there we traveled through Monument Valley feeling very much in a movie set.
Then on to Petrified Forest National Park. I expected Petrified logs. But the reality far exceeded my expectations.
New Mexico provided a nice and interesting short hike along the Catwalk.
And then we visited the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Worth the long drive in from Silver City.
Chaco Canyon. I highly encourage anyone with an interest in Ancient Puebloan ruins to visit here. The scale of these ruins is breathtaking. Made me think of the legend of the Seven Cities of Cibola.
Cedar Mesa, of course. Unbelievable the shear number of ruins. And I learned they had accessed these cities from the canyon rim. Not the canyon bottom as I had previously assumed.
