Joannie's 60th (!!!??) birthday was but a few days away. We knew we were going somewhere. We had just gotten back from our spring Utah trip. At the literal last minute that somewhere ended up being Maui!
Full disclosure: This was NOT a human powered adventure! 😎 We stayed at the Westin Maui Resort And Spa. It was VERY nice but housekeeping was at weird hours.
We took in the sunrise at Haleakala summit and then biked down from the 6500 ft level. You are no longer allowed to bike from the summit. (A little lame...) It was very civilized...
Drove around the West Maui mountains and hiked up to Iao needle in Iao valley.
Drove to Hana and ate Huli-Huli chicken at Koki Beach Park.
Snorkeled at Honolua Bay. (Excellent!)
Helicopter tour of Haleakala and Hana with Maui Helicopters. This tour was superb with great views all around the crater of Haleakala and then the pilot dived into a canyon with waterfalls pouring into it. On the flight over to Hana, literally dozens of waterfalls could be seen.
Pro-tip: We booked through The Snorkel Store and our 45 minute flight was $187/pp vs 220 advertised. That's including the fuel surcharge that's not advertised. Still a good deal.
In addition we went into Lahaina for half a day, bobbed on the beach in front of the hotel, bobbed in the hotel pool and drank probably too much alcohol. Great Fun!!
Aloha!
