Road trip to Alaska! Part 1: Getting there.

Oh man! Where to begin? Well at the beginning of course. We took the month of June and didn't get home on time.

June 1
We left home and a day later in steady rain, discovered we had a significant leak in the camper roof. We pulled into my brother's place in Oregon for a visit and to affect some repairs.
Burney Falls

Leaving Oregon it rained all the way through Washington and we camped near Marblemount that night in heavy rain. All was well with the roof patch.

Crossing into Canada the weather improved and actually got hot. We found great campgrounds all the way up through Canada. We stayed at Skihist, and Whiskers Point, before we began the "Alaska Highway" at Dawson Creek.

Wyatt likes the biggest sticks

Chetwynd is full of these wood carvings and was having a contest as we were there.

The forest and undergrowth has been brushed back along both sides of the highways since I last drove here in the late 70's. It's much safer for both motorists and wildlife. Of course it's been paved too. And speaking of wildlife...

We stopped for a bit at beautiful Muncho Lake.

We made it up to Watson Lake where we of course had to stop and hike through the sign forest. It has gotten much bigger with the passing of years!

Fueling was a source of both amusement and angst. But I had mentally prepped for this so all was well.

Between Dawson Creek and Silver City (Kluane Lake) we stayed at Beaver Lake, Big Creek and then on the beach at Kluane Lake. One of the few things I had pre-planned was to attempt to get a flight seeing tour from Icefield Discovery into the Mt Logan area in the St Elias mountains of the Icefields Ranges. My friend and I had summited Mt Logan via a technical route back in 2004 and I was feeling nostalgic.  I had used this flight service back then when it was still owned by Andy Williams, a legendary bush pilot for the area. I checked in and enquired about my loose plan. They were accommodating but the weather was iffy for the following morning. They gave us a time to show up and with that we went and made camp near the Kluane Lake shore. It was play time for Wyatt and he can be somewhat demanding about it.

It was now June 10th. We showed up at 8am and were met by Sam our pilot who declared it was time to go. We were all ready with our cold weather gear and Wyatt was settled in the camper so off we went. It was comical as we were taxiing down the runway I could look out and see Wyatt staring out the window as we passed by. Joannie got co-pilot and I was behind Sam in the Helio-Courier aircraft. The same that had flown us in 2004. We had a nice flight but ultimately were unable to penetrate the weather far enough to get to Mt. Logan.

After the flight we continued on and stayed at Lakeview campground.

The next day we would finally cross into Alaska!
